When you first sign up for the military, it can be hard to look ahead and imagine where your life will lead you after the military. The military is a huge sacrifice and one that takes all of your energy. But, as your service term gets ready to end, it’s important to start thinking about the future and what you plan to do. Ideally, this is something you’ve at least thought about a bit over the years, as you find areas that appeal to you more than others.
As far as what career is best for veterans, there are actually a number of jobs that are quite common with those who have finished with life in the military. Here’s a look at some of the more popular ones.

Pilot

For those who served in the air force, a career as a pilot for a commercial or corporate airline makes perfect sense. The average salary is $89,400 and this field is also on the rise where growth is concerned. It’s important to note you will need to convert your military flight certification into the FAA certification, as you will be flying different planes.

Security Manager

If you’re looking for something that allows you to be at home and not have to travel, then life as a security manager could be the answer. This field is on the rise and the average salary is $69,900. Responsibilities include planning and then coordinating all the security activities for the firm/company that you work for.

Logistician and Supply Chain Manager

In this role, you will be the one figuring out how to make the supply chain run like a well-oiled machine. Your life in the military has taught you how to be precise and think with a logistical mindset. This type of position can be found in all kinds of industries and is even enjoying a growth period according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average salary is just over $73,000.

FBI Agent

Life in the military prepares you well for life as an FBI agent. This particular field is set to see a 17% growth over the next 10 years and has an average yearly salary of $114,000. A military background gives you the same chain of command that law enforcement uses, which means it’s a relatively simple transition to make.

What About Education?

Of course, after reading the list of popular careers for veterans, it becomes painfully obvious that you’re going to need some sort of educational training for most of them. This is where USA scholarships can come in very handy, so you’re not forced to pay for schooling out of pocket. The Pat Tillman Foundation scholarship program is an excellent example, as it awards up to 60 veterans, active-duty military, and military spouses each year. Scholars will receive up to $10,000 per academic year, which can make a huge difference.
